Manmohan Singh's Affection for Maruti 800 and His Deep Concern for the Common Man
Dr. Manmohan Singh, one of India’s most respected leaders, is often remembered for his intellect, humility, and his pivotal role in shaping India’s economic landscape through the 1991 economic reforms. However, beyond his profound political and economic legacy, there was a side to Dr. Singh that reflected his deep-rooted simplicity and his constant concern for the welfare of the common man. One such reflection of this simplicity was his unexpected affection for his Maruti 800, a car that symbolized his middle-class values.
I had the privilege of serving as the head of the Special Protection Group (SPG) close protection team for Dr. Singh from 2004 to 2007. During those years, I had the chance to witness some memorable moments that reveal the essence of the man who served as India's Prime Minister. One such memory that stands out was Dr. Singh's love for his Maruti 800, a car that he prized above all others. It was often parked behind the luxurious black BMW at the Prime Minister’s residence, a vehicle meant for his security, not for his comfort.
Despite the presence of the gleaming BMW, Dr. Singh would always make it a point to remind me: "This is my car," referring to the Maruti 800. It became a symbol of his connection to the ordinary Indian citizen. Dr. Singh never saw the high-end BMW as his own. "The car worth crores belongs to the PM, but my car is this Maruti," he would say, with a sense of satisfaction.
It was not just the car, but his unwavering approach to life that resonated with people. Dr. Singh, despite being the leader of the country, always retained his middle-class roots. He believed that his job as Prime Minister was to represent and worry about the common man, and the Maruti 800 was a tangible reminder of that commitment.
As I would try to explain the practical need for the BMW – its importance for his security – he would still insist on keeping the Maruti 800 close, a constant reminder of his humble beginnings and his promise to serve the common people of India. For Dr. Singh, this simple car was far more than just a mode of transport. It was a symbol of his values, his identity, and his humility.Dr. Singh’s legacy goes far beyond the economic reforms he pioneered. It is the simplicity, intellect, and integrity with which he led the country that continues to inspire millions. His life serves as a reminder that true leadership is not about luxury or grandeur, but about staying connected to one’s roots and working for the people, no matter the position one holds.
In the wake of his passing, Dr. Manmohan Singh leaves behind a legacy that is both profound and deeply human. The Maruti 800, his favorite car, will always be a symbol of his dedication to simplicity, humility, and his unwavering focus on serving the common man.
